The Gingerbread Man

The Gingerbread Man paid us a visit today.  We were beyond excited!

He also sent each of us a letter.  Our buddies were available to read them to us.

Pajamas and Pancakes

On Friday, December 23rd, we will be having a pajama day in our class.  Your child is welcome to wear his/her pajamas to school that day.  If they aren't comfortable wearing pajamas, they can wear 'comfy' clothes!

As part of that day, I will be making pancakes for breakfast.  Your child can either eat breakfast at home or wait until they get to school.

Winter Party

Our Winter Party will be held on Thursday, December 22nd  11;50-12:50.  The following parents signed up to help with the party.  If you are still available, we'd love to have you join us.  If not, I completely understand.
I have all of the supplies needed!

New Teaching Assistant

We have had a change of staffing in our classroom.   Mrs. Walden is no longer working in our class.  We welcome Mrs. Hoffman as our new teaching assistant.

Buddies

We met with our buddy class for the first time last week.  They are the 3rd graders in Ms. Ruhl's class.  We will meet with them every other Friday and for other special occasions.  We will read with them and do special projects.
During Library today, they came to help us work on the laptops.  We were playing games that teach students how to code.  Your child can play these games from home too!

Go to the Guilderland Elementary Website.  Click on the Library link.

Go to the Hour Of Code (last link)

We played Candy Quest and Bits & Blocks.

Donations needed

If anyone is able to donate disinfecting wipes, it would be greatly appreciated.  We've all been sick this week and I want to start using the wipes to clean our tables/surfaces!
Thanks in advance!

We Are Thankful For...

We each created a feather for our giant turkey.  The feathers tell what we are thankful for.

Some of the things students wrote were:

I am thankful for.....
my mom
my dad
my family
my house
my hamster
my dog
my cats
my video games
my grandma

Giant Dominoes

The students have been using the blocks as giant dominoes!

Chapter 3 in Math

We just started Chapter 3 in Math.  It focuses on the numbers 6-9.  Feel free to start that chapter in the homework book.

One of the things we will be doing in this chapter is deconstructing the numbers.  This means showing how we can make the number in a variety of ways.  It is the beginning of our understanding of addition.

We used magnetic 10 frames and counters to show this.  I used the easel to record all of the possible ways to make 6.

6 blue counters and 0 red counters
5 blue counters and 1 red counter
4 blue counters and 2 red counters.....

The students used their own counters to model the ways to make 6.
4 red counters and 2 yellow counters is a way to show 6.

3 red counters and 3 yellow counters is a way to make 6.

1 red counter and 5 yellow counters is a way to make 6.

Super Readers

We have become Super Readers and are learning to use super powers to read books.  The students are so excited about learning to read!
Reader Man left us special super reader pointers.  We are using the pointers to match our reading to the print on the page.  We are learning to be 'crisp' with our pointing.  That means to tap each word as you read.  As we are reading, we are checking ourselves to make sure that we are saying what is written.  Be careful of long words, they only get one tap!
